Here you see Dr. Jacobs examining a 10yr old mare with Equine Recurrent Uveitis.

Also known as Moon blindness, it is one of the most common causes of blindness in horses. “Uveitis” means inflammation inside the eye. Some of the signs associated with ERU include: red & swollen eye membranes, rubbing the eye, cloudiness in the eye, watery eyes, holding the eye closed & the horse will also be sensitive to light. These signs can also be associated with many other eye issues as well, including corneal ulceration or a scratch on the eye. If you think your horse is experiencing any discomfort or has an injury to one or both of his/her eyes, call the clinic immediately! Eye injuries can progress rapidly! The best medicine is early detection and treatment.
