A successful breeding program begins with the careful management of your broodmares. Mares need to be evaluated prior to each breeding season to screen for infections or other "dirty" conditions. Mistakes made in the management of your mares will lead to increased veterinary costs and to potential medical problems for your foals.
Screening / Reproductive Exam
This exam is performed prior to breeding a mare and can sometimes include an ultrasound examination.
Record Keeping
An often overlooked but invaluable tool in operating a successful breeding operation is record keeping. Performance Equine Vets can provide record keeping documents to breeding barns to help them better manage their needs.
Managing the "Dirty" Mare
The term "dirty" is used for a mare that has an infected or inhospitable uterine environment. Mares which are healthy in all other aspects can still be "dirty" and unable to conceive. It is of the utmost importance that a mare be infection free when bred or artificially inseminated. A Veterinarian can clean-up a mare thru the use of antibiotics and regular uterine flushes.
