Colic

Colic is a general term which refers to any condition which results in abdominal pain. More specifically, colic is a medical problem centered in the gastrointestinal tract of the horse. Horses that colic will exhibit signs of discomfort by rolling, lying down, "camping out" or seem generally uncomfortable.

Colic can be life-threatening and needs to be addressed immediately. Below is a list of colic types:

  • Impaction - This occurs when hay is "impacted" and does not advance properly thru the intestinal tract.

  • Twist - This occurs when the intestine twists, creating a blockage in the GI tract.

  • Colitis - This is an inflammatory condition in the GI tract that is generally caused by food, medications or foreign bodies which have entered the intestine.
